Jeff Bezos

Early Life

Jeff Bezos was born in 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a curious, inventive kid who liked taking things apart to see how they worked. He spent time tinkering in his grandfather's garage, building and fixing whatever he could get his hands on. That habit of pulling things apart and putting them back together stuck with him for the rest of his life.

Quitting His Job to Sell Books

As a grown-up, Jeff landed a good job on Wall Street, the part of New York where people work with money and investments. It paid well and it was safe. But he kept thinking about a new thing called the internet, which was growing fast, and he had an idea he couldn't shake. He wanted to build a store that lived online, where people could shop without ever leaving home.

So in 1994 he quit. He moved near Seattle and started his company out of a garage, which is where a surprising number of big tech companies got their start. He picked books to sell first, because there were millions of them and a website could list far more than any normal bookstore could fit on its shelves.

From Books to Everything

He named the company Amazon, after the enormous river in South America, because he wanted it to be huge. The name also started with an "A," which helped it show up near the top of alphabetical lists back then. The bet on books worked, and customers liked being able to find almost any title and have it shipped to their door.

Then Amazon kept adding more. Soon it sold toys, electronics, clothes, groceries, and just about anything else you can think of. The company also built Amazon Web Services, which rents out computing power to other companies, plus devices like the Kindle e-reader and the Alexa voice assistant. All of that growth helped make Jeff one of the richest people in the world.

Rockets and Beyond

Jeff had loved space since he was a kid, and he didn't forget about it. In 2000 he started a space company called Blue Origin, with the goal of building rockets that could fly people off the planet and back. He even flew to the edge of space himself on one of the company's rockets.

In 2021 he stepped down as Amazon's CEO, the top boss, and became its executive chairman instead. That gave him more time for Blue Origin and other projects. The little garage bookstore had grown into something he could step back from and still watch keep running.

What Jeff Teaches Us

Jeff gave up a safe, comfortable job to chase an idea that might have flopped. Plenty of people thought selling books on the internet was a strange bet in 1994. He tried it anyway, and he kept asking what customers might want next instead of settling for what already worked.

His story is a good reminder that big things often start small and a little messy. A curious kid in a garage became the founder of one of the largest companies on Earth. The garage part wasn't a fluke. It's where he kept going back to figure out how things work.
