Larry Page

Early Life

Larry Page was born in 1973 in East Lansing, Michigan. Both of his parents were computer experts, so computers were just part of the furniture in his house. He grew up around machines, manuals, and the kind of dinner-table talk most kids never hear. By the time other children were figuring out how a computer worked, Larry already knew his way around one.

Meeting Sergey Brin

Larry went on to study at Stanford University as a PhD student. That's where he met another student named Sergey Brin. The two of them argued about almost everything at first, but they kept coming back to the same problem. The web was getting huge, and finding anything useful in it was a mess.

Search engines back then mostly counted how often a word showed up on a page. Larry and Sergey had a different idea. They figured a page was probably important if lots of other pages linked to it, kind of like a popularity vote across the whole web. That idea became PageRank.

Building Google

Larry and Sergey founded Google in 1998. They didn't start in a fancy office. They worked out of a garage, which is about as ordinary a place to start a company as you can get. Their search engine was faster and gave better answers than the others, and word spread quickly.

The name Google comes from "googol," the math word for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. It was a nod to the gigantic amount of information they wanted to organize. Larry served as CEO at different points, helping steer the company as it grew from two students into one of the biggest names on the internet.

In 2015 the company reorganized under a new parent company called Alphabet. Larry became CEO of Alphabet for a while. The setup let Google's search business and the company's other projects each have room to run.

What Larry Teaches Us

Larry's big break came from looking at a problem everyone else had given up on and asking a simple question nobody else was asking. He didn't have more money or a better lab than other people working on search. He had a smarter way of thinking about what made a web page worth showing first.

Growing up around computers helped, but plenty of kids grow up around things they never do anything with. Larry paid attention, stayed curious, and teamed up with someone who pushed his thinking. That combination, more than the garage or the funny name, is what built Google.
