Early Life

Mark Zuckerberg was born in 1984 in White Plains, New York, and he grew up in a nearby town called Dobbs Ferry. His dad was a dentist, his mom was a psychiatrist, and Mark was the kind of kid who liked taking things apart to see how they worked. Computers caught his attention early.

He taught himself to code when he was young, back when learning to program meant reading thick books and a lot of trial and error. As a kid he built a little messaging program so the people in his house and his dad's dental office could send each other notes. He called it ZuckNet. A homemade chat app, years before texting was normal.

Starting Facebook at Harvard

Mark went to Harvard University to study, and he kept building things on the side. In 2004, while living in a dorm with his roommates, he launched a website called TheFacebook. It was a simple idea. Students could make a page with their photo and details and see their classmates online.

He didn't do it alone. His college roommates Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin helped get it going. The site spread fast across Harvard, then to other colleges, and before long it opened up to anyone in the world. It got so big that Mark made a huge decision and left Harvard to run the company full time.

From Facebook to Meta

As Facebook grew, it started buying other apps that people loved. It bought Instagram, the photo-sharing app, and WhatsApp, the messaging app used by billions of people. Suddenly one company sat behind some of the most popular ways people stay in touch.

In 2021, Mark renamed the whole company Meta. The idea was to build something he calls the metaverse, a mix of the internet and virtual reality where people might hang out, work, and play using 3D headsets. The Facebook app still exists, but Meta is the bigger company that owns it.

Along the way, Mark became one of the youngest self-made billionaires the world had ever seen. He was a billionaire in his twenties, which almost never happens. But he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give most of their money away through something they started called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

What Mark Teaches Us

Mark's story started with a kid who liked computers enough to build his own little programs for fun. He didn't wait until he was older or finished with school to make something real. He built TheFacebook in a dorm room while he was still a student.

His path shows that a small project can grow into something enormous, and that you can start with the tools and friends right in front of you. It also shows that running a giant company comes with hard choices and plenty of criticism. Big ideas are exciting, and they come with big responsibility.
