Nolan Bushnell

Early Life

Nolan Bushnell was born in 1943 in Clearfield, Utah. As a young man he studied engineering, so he knew how machines and circuits actually worked. He also took a summer job at an amusement park, running games and watching what made people line up to play. That mix stuck with him, the engineering and the fun, and it pointed him straight toward the thing he'd build his life around.

Starting Atari

In 1972 Nolan teamed up with a fellow engineer named Ted Dabney, and the two of them started a company called Atari. Computers at the time were huge, expensive machines that mostly lived in offices and universities. Nolan had a different idea. He wanted to put a computer game in a cabinet, drop it in a bar or an arcade, and let anyone play it for a quarter.

There wasn't really a video game industry yet for Atari to join. Nolan and his team were busy inventing it as they went. Atari became one of the first companies to make video games a real business, and a lot of what came after, from arcades to home consoles, traces back to those early years.

Pong and Chuck E. Cheese

Atari's breakout game was Pong, a video version of table tennis. Two white paddles, a bouncing square, and a number for the score. That was the whole game. It sounds almost too plain to be fun, and yet people couldn't stop playing it. Pong turned into one of the first big video game hits and helped prove that people would happily pay to play games on a screen.

Later in the 1970s Nolan came up with another idea: a pizza place full of arcade games and animatronic characters that moved and sang. He called it Chuck E. Cheese, named after the cartoon mouse who became its star. Kids could eat pizza, play games, and watch a robot band all in one spot. It turned arcade games into a family outing.

Along the way Nolan gave a teenage Steve Jobs one of his first real jobs at Atari. Jobs went on to co-found Apple, so a piece of computer history runs right through Nolan's company.

What Nolan Teaches Us

Nolan eventually sold Atari to Warner Communications, and the company grew into a giant of the early game world. Atari brought video games out of the lab and into arcades, living rooms, and pizza parlors, where millions of people met them for the first time.

Nolan saw fun as something worth building a business around, back when plenty of people thought computers were only for serious work. He bet that a simple game could make a stranger smile and reach for a quarter, and he was right. That bet helped start an entire industry that's still going strong today.
